911 Carrera

When most people hear the word Porsche, the 911 is the car that they think of, so when you turn up in the 911 Carrera, no one is going to be in any doubt about what you’re driving. Its traditional flat-six engine provides the iconic Porsche soundtrack. In the latest 911, you also have the time-honoured rear-wheel drive layout and a wide front track for improved handling.

Key features:

Type: Coupe | Engine: Horizontal 6 3.4 | Seats: 4 | Bags: 2 hand luggage
Transmission: Manual | Sat Nav: Yes | Parking sensors: None

The 911 shape dates back to the early 1960s, but over the years it’s evolved and gained the latest technology to allow it to remain a member of the exclusive supercar set. Unlike the air-cooled originals, the latest 991 series cars are water-cooled and the engine is linked to a seven-speed manual gearbox, though it retains the traditional rear-wheel drive. It’s also the first 911 to use largely aluminium construction, meaning that while it’s bigger than the previous model, it’s lighter too, retaining performance and cutting fuel consumption so it can deliver up to 38 mpg.

The combination of lightness and a 350bhp 3.4 litre engine means the Carrera from the Exotic Car Collection by Enterprise can sprint to 60 mph in only 4.6 seconds and has plenty of power for safe overtaking. Aerodynamic modifications improve downforce and cut lift for assured handling at speed. Just make sure you open the window a touch so you can enjoy that flat-six sound.

Safety is taken care of by the Porsche Stability Management system, which will help keep you out of trouble. There’s also post-collision braking and a full complement of airbags should the worst happen. An auto-dimming mirror will prevent you from being dazzled at night.

Inside, there are black leather sports seats that will hold you tight through corners, and a four-way adjustable steering wheel means it’s easy to find an ideal driving position. You can enjoy in-car entertainment from a Bose surround sound system, and you’re kept comfortable by automatic climate control. Ahead of you is the familiar five-dial Porsche instrument pack, but it’s supplemented by a high-res multifunction display and seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat nav and MP3 compatibility.

For a low-slung sports car, the 911 is easy to get in and out of, thanks to wide opening doors and sills protected by stainless steel plates. The rear seats are really only for short journeys or small children; though in the case of the latter they do have Isofix points. The front boot will take a couple of small bags if you’re planning a long weekend – leave the kids at home, of course, and you can use the rear seat space.
